Chullachaqui caspi

About the plant

Chullachaqui caspi is a large Amazonian forest tree; some sources identify it with Hevea guianensis (Euphorbiaceae). The name is linked to the chullachaqui — a mythical forest spirit in Peruvian and Brazilian folklore: 'one-footed', trickster and guardian of the jungle, able to take the form of people and animals; its distinguishing trait is a deformed, twisted, or hoof-like foot. The spirit is said to punish disrespect for the forest and breaking hunting taboos, and to lead people deep into the jungle.

Properties and use

The tree has a place in traditional medicine (wounds, fever, inflammation). In the dieta context chullachaqui caspi is a guide to the knowledge of many plants: the tree spirit introduces the apprentice to other forest spirits and opens access to plant wisdom. It strengthens concentration and meditation.

Use in dietas

Dieta with chullachaqui caspi opens the dietero's access to the 'library' of plants: curanderos say that after this dieta it is easier to establish contact with other teachers and understand their language. The plant teaches focus and not to scatter; the trickster-spirit image reminds that knowledge can come unexpectedly and in a guise not immediately recognized. The dieta is guided by experienced maestros.

Precautions

Contraindications and precautions are determined by tradition and the maestro. Do not begin the dieta without preparation and guidance.
