Ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi)
Although ayahuasca is usually mentioned as a drink, its basis is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi, which Shipibo themselves consider a powerful plant teacher. The vine spirit is often called Abuelita (grandmother) or Madre Ayahuasca (Mother Ayahuasca) – because it gives wisdom, but sometimes teaches harshly through difficult visions. Ayahuasca cleanses body and spirit through vomiting and visions, 'opens the door' to the world of spirits.
